About the history of Tibia

Introduction

A world that has existed for a long time has a past and therefore also a history :). So also Tibia, and the knowledge about the history of Tibia should be collected here, so that what happens through time, namely what happened to be forgotten, does not happen. This is not about the legends and myths, as they are described in the encyclopedia and based more on beliefs and dreams, no, this is about the pure knowledge about and about Tibia, what really happened there. This knowledge is based on sources from earlier times and the experience of some players, especially mine, and I hope to live up to this challenging task. The hungry for knowledge who wants to learn from the past and reads these lines, may forgive me :).

In the following, a time series should first be designed, on which the knowledge about the past can then be collected, summarized and incorporated.

The Origin of Tibia and the Individual Epochs In my opinion, the history of Tibia can best be divided into three epochs: the old time (alpha phase), the middle time (beta phase), and the new time. The new times should not be reported here, as they are still in the future and therefore not part of the story yet :).

In the minds of the creators, CIP, who are also often referred to as gods or programmers, Tibia began in the spring of MXMVI, the first ray of light, when it was online for the first time, fell on Tibia in MXMVII.i. While the old time was essentially an epoch shaped by the development of the environment, comparable to Genesis from the Bible, the middle period was an epoch that was essentially shaped by social events, i.e. by the players.

The old days

The old time is divided into four phases. There are few records, especially of the beginnings. In the first phase (alpha 1) the possibilities of the players were very limited, but you know that you could play games like chess, checkers, mills and TicTacToe, so the games hall seems to be one of the oldest buildings in Tibia. With the second phase (alpha 2), starting in MXMVII.vi, the diversity was already greater.

You could buy weapons (it seems that Sam already existed at this point, but unfortunately he will not be mentioned until later), you could hit monsters and you could write and put down pieces of paper (scrolls). A huge quantum leap in development occurred with the beginning of the third phase (alpha 3). This is the time when "color" came into play, so to speak, and it is also the time when many famous players appeared for the first time and left lasting impressions (I also saw the face of this world here for the first time :)) I think this is also the time that many former players mourn, it was the good old days.

But now to the facts: The third dimension was introduced, ie you could climb stairs and ladders. And a day and night cycle was introduced. A tibia day lasts one hour, it starts to get dark 10 minutes before the hour, and it is not light 10 minutes after the hour. Why is that? Well, according to CIP, because Tibia has 2 suns. In order to be able to master the darkness, torches, candles and lanterns were introduced. Some items can be stacked for the first time, and Quentin, Sam, Frodo and Gorn are mentioned for the first time.

Bows and crossbows were introduced as additional weapons.

The changes were so immense that the existing characters had to be deleted and each player had to start over. A new combat system has been introduced. What the old combat system was like is not known, but the new one is very good and corresponds to the current situation in many respects. You started with 100 health points, and depending on how many experience points you got by killing monsters, you went up a level. Only at that time it was very difficult to get to a high level, as each level up required a fairly doubling of experience points. The highest level reached in this combat system, as far as I know, was level 11 by Cipreii. There were properties such as dexterity, strength and intelligence starting with 10 points each, with each level up, a randomly selected property was increased by 2 points. However, it is not clear whether these properties had any effect. Skills themselves were not visible, but sometimes when the fight was successful, the well-known "you advanced in ...."

The combat mode was identical to the current one, only there was no button for ranged combat, so the one with the two blue men, there was a button to stop the fight. The variety of monsters was limited, there were rats, spiders (I'm not sure about snakes and wolves) trolls, orcs and cyclops.

The areas of the city of Tibia that already existed were the harbor, the farm, of course the Gameshall, Frodo's Inn, Sam's forge, Quentin's temple, Gorn's shop and a few houses, oh yes, not to forget the lighthouse. Many other important buildings, such as B. the church, the warehouse east of the north gate, yes the north gate itself, did not yet exist, even the castle was previously only a construction site. and no city wall yet existed.

The underground consisted of a few passages, and it was particularly dangerous if you got lost in the orcs' grotto. Most dangerous, however, was the Cyclops Hall far to the north, where the individual dragon now resides. The fight with the monsters was only dangerous if you didn't have enough provisions with you, because the HP regenerated spontaneously while eating .... :). But when you died you had to start all over again, you appeared on Quentin, and only the name remained, everything, levels and equipment, were that of a newbie.

In this phase about 500 people were already playing Tibia, and CIP had an interesting map on its homepage, a map of Germany, on which it was shown which city how many players came from, the foreign players were taken into account with their national flag :).

Oh yes, and in these beautiful times there was a meeting with CIP every Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm at Frodo's to drink a beer together and talk about the game, well, those were the times .....

My first report on the old times ends here, but descriptions of the following epochs will follow. In particular about alpha 4, a time in which some of the most famous heroes of Tibia, I will only mention Yorin (, discovered the face of Tibia for the first time. Or maybe someone else would like to write down his knowledge of these times (?)
